Independent variables are the variables that are changed in the experiment.
Dependent variables are what you measure or observe to determine the effect of the independent variable.
Controlled variables are kept the same during an experiment.
Here is a video that will help you further understand the different variables in experiments.
Use this link to an online exercise where you can pick out independent, dependent, and control variables in different situations. It’s a good way to reinforce what we’ve learned in the unit.
When you work through the practice, ask yourself:
“What is being changed?” → independent variable
“What is being measured or observed?” → dependent variable
“What is staying the same to keep it fair?” → control variables
Try to complete it before the test so you feel confident.
